Have you ever tried the popular and centuries-old sport Muay Thai? At least you must have heard of it. The sport has been a part of Thai history and culture for hundreds of years and it is still a huge part of the Thai people’s life. One of the must-dos while being in Thailand is definitely to watch a fight. The atmosphere is like nothing you have ever experienced!

Muay Thai is Thailand’s national sport. Our social media coordinator Fabian went to the Dee Muay Thai gym in Bali to try it out. Tight shorts and a fearful look is a must when posing in front of a camera.

For centuries, Thai warriors have used this effective self-defense method on the battlefields of wars and conflicts. The Thai army has had a big part of the sport’s history. Soldiers have used and trained Muay Thai techniques as long as there has been an army in Thailand.

Nowadays, Muay Thai is still strongly part of the Thai culture. This sport is extremely physical and unlike normal boxing, Muay Thai combines most body parts such as shins, feet, knees, elbows, fists and head! It has been said that Muay Thai is the most powerful of all martial arts.

While many people associate Muay Thai with elbows and knees, there is a whole range of techniques that are available to Muay Thai practitioners of the sport.

So, what would be a better place to get hooked on this sport than on its birthplace, Thailand? Due to the huge popularity of the sport, you can find training camps and arenas everywhere.

In Bangkok, you can try out Muay Thai at Sor Vorapin Boxing Gym with trainers who have over 15 years of experience in training. Courses are for everyone and the way of training is designed based on individuals’ skills and strengths. The gym is located just around 30 minutes drive from our partner university, Siam University. One training session is only around 13 euros.

The position of your hands is very important if you don’t want to get knocked out in martial arts.

The most well-known stadium to watch the fights in Bangkok is Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. Another popular stadium in Bangkok is Rajadamnern Stadium. Both stadiums are always crowded and busy as they are the most popular ones for watching a fight. Go and feel the exciting and great atmosphere there!

Sinbi Muay Thai Camp is a traditional gym located in Phuket. The quality of Muay Thai training is ensured by getting the best fighters and focusing on providing excellence. From our partner university, Prince of Songkla University, it’s just around 30 minutes drive to the gym and the price for one class is only about 10 euros. After the session, you can head to Nai Harn beach, the most beautiful beach in Thailand. Not bad at all!

The biggest stadium in Southern Thailand is Patong Boxing in Phuket. Extreme Muay Thai fights are arranged on every Monday, Thursday and Saturday night. They also provide training lessons and you will learn an original of Muay Thai style! When training, remember to always have an insurance which covers all the possible injuries!

Muay Thai is more than just a sport! It’s a part of the Thai people’s life, history and culture. So while getting into Muay Thai, you will not only sweat and get in shape at the gym, but you will also get a better understanding of the Thai culture and their lifestyle.
