Accommodation in Kuala Lumpur

Students can choose between on-campus dorms and off-campus private accommodation.

On campus

Students live at the International Residential College. The residence has kitchenettes, TV rooms, study and meeting rooms, activity areas, a computer room, a cafe and laundry facilities. There are both private and shared rooms available. Monthly rent is around RM 540-600 (single room) or RM 270-300 (shared room). The rooms are cheap but modest.

International students can also stay at the International Transit House where the rent is RM 1000/month. If you wish to live on-campus, you need to apply for the room before arriving in Malaysia. Contact for more information.

Off campus

Most international students from Western countries live in apartments rented from the private market and located off campus.

In the Asian business culture, it’s common to do business face-to-face and arranging accommodation in advance by email or phone may be difficult. This is nothing to worry about, though, because taking care of housing arrangements once you are at the destination is straightforward. This is also when the details of the rental agreement and the final price are agreed upon.

It’s recommended to stay at a hostel/hotel for a few days after arriving in Malaysia and to compare different housing options. This also allows you to meet the fellow students and find roommates. A popular option for short-term accommodation after arriving in Kuala Lumpur is Suzie’s Guest House.

Universiti Putra Malaysia is located near Serdang’s KTM station and Asia Exchange recommends students to either live in Serdang area or in the southern parts of Kuala Lumpur, to avoid a longer commute to the university.

A good idea is to search for a condo near a KTM station that is on the KTM line “Rawang-Seremban”. Mid Valley is located on that line and the area has a lot of nice apartments. You can live e.g. at Tasam Desaminium Apartment that is located 15 minutes from the university campus. The rent is RM 500-650 a month. A bus drives to the campus every half an hour.

The Academia Apartment and The Mines. The Academia Apartment is located at South City Plaza. These quality student apartments are located near a Serdang KTM station and have a direct bus connection to the UPM campus. The surrounding housing areas include Balakong, Taman University Indah, Taman Sri Serdang, Bukit Serdang, Seri Kembangan, Serdang Jaya and Serdang Baru.
